Creating a Balanced Workout Routine: Tips for the New Year

At MotivatePT, we thoroughly believe in the power of exercise. If you’re reading this, it is likely you have a new year resolution dedicated to your fitness, and maybe somewhat of a workout routine. We want to make sure you’re set up for success!

A mistake we see often is trying to do too much, not keeping up with your plan, deciding this is evidence you can’t do it after all, and then finally, throwing in the towel.

We believe that the key to a balanced workout routine and making your new year resolution a reality is taking an approach to fitness that doesn’t just address all aspects of fitness (strength, endurance and flexibility), but is part of an overall approach to life that prioritises wellbeing.

Contrary to the mass of wellness trends we see come and go, wellbeing is extremely simple. It is often as simple as sleep, exercise, a nutrient-dense diet, sunlight, hobbies and human connection. A balanced workout routine that is going to be successful and truly fulfil you will fit seamlessly into this wider understanding of wellbeing.

Whether you’re a beginner or an experienced fitness enthusiast, this guide will help you create a sustainable, balanced workout routine that supports your fitness, wider wellbeing and your life.

How to design a balanced workout routine

Without balance, even the best intentions can lead to burnout or an unhealthy obsession with fitness. A balanced workout routine considers all aspects of fitness while leaving room for the other joys and responsibilities of life.

Define what YOU would really like to achieve this year

Start by identifying what you will achieve with your workout routine.

It is important to distinguish what you really want, with what you think you should want. For example, you might have a fantasy of being a 5am person training for an hour before work. This may indeed be what you want, OR maybe you realise that what you really want is to feel your best – light on your feet, and energised.

Whatever your goals, make sure they are realistic and adaptable. Flexible goals allow you to celebrate progress without feeling discouraged by setbacks, keeping your new year resolution empowering and supportive.

Ensure you’re covering the key aspects of fitness

A balanced workout routine involves a variety of movement types that address different components of fitness. We see many of our clients come to us with an unbalanced fitness routine. For example, resistance training is fantastic, but it’s not enough on its own. Stretching, mobility, and cardiovascular exercise are also important for a fitness routine that’ll see you through the different stages of life.

Here’s how you can integrate these elements:

1. Strength training – These can include bodyweight movements like squats and push-ups or weightlifting exercises if you have access to equipment. No need to go to the gym – you can get some weights to keep at home! Strength training builds muscle, keeps bones strong, supports joint health, and boosts metabolism.

2. Cardiovascular exercise – Add cardio sessions to your routine to improve heart health and endurance. Activities like brisk walking, cycling, swimming, or dancing are excellent options.

3. Flexibility and mobility – Stretching and mobility exercises often take a backseat, but they are vital for preventing injuries and improving overall movement quality. Practices like yoga or dedicated stretching sessions will be game-changing

4. Rest and recovery – Rest days are just as important as workout days. A lot of you don’t like to hear this, or nod along while rejecting the idea internally. However, rest is essential to your wellbeing and therefore to your fitness.

Make it work for you

When creating a fitness practice that is part of overall wellbeing, it is going to be one that is sustainable and fits your lifestyle and personal preferences.

Whether you prefer exercising at home or outside, in the morning or evening, have children or not, the hours you work, etc., – there’ll be a balanced workout routine that works for you.

For those of you who are yet to experience enjoyment of exercise, this is going to be a process of trial and error and consistency. You probably won’t find a workout routine that you really enjoy straight away, so just keep trying different things and keep going. You’ll get there.

Prioritise quality over quantity – short, focused sessions can be more effective than long, unfocused ones – and stay flexible. Life can be unpredictable, and your needs may change, so be prepared to adapt. If you miss a workout, don’t stress.

A balanced workout routine is part of a wider approach to wellbeing

Fitness is not a standalone solution to wellbeing, it is part of it. To truly take care of your wellbeing – mentally, physically and spiritually – there are other elements to consider.

Sleep

Unfortunately, too many of us think we can override the body’s innate need for sleep. While each of us varies in how much sleep we need, every single one of us needs deep, quality sleep for wellbeing.

Sleep supports physical repair, memory consolidation, and hormonal balance. During rest, the brain clears toxins, promoting mental clarity and emotional stability.

When sleep is insufficient, these restorative processes falter. Cognitive functions like focus and decision-making decline, while emotional resilience diminishes, leading to stress and irritability.

Prolonged sleep deprivation weakens the immune system and raises the risk of serious health issues, including heart disease and diabetes. Beyond health, lack of sleep strains relationships, reducing empathy and connection.

Prioritising rest is essential for physical vitality, emotional balance, and meaningful engagement with the world.

Food

A balanced diet supports everything from brain function to immune defence, fuelling physical activity and maintaining overall health. Without sufficient nutrition, the body struggles to repair itself leading to fatigue, weakened immunity, and impaired concentration, and limited results from your workouts.

Beyond the physical effects, an inadequate diet can also impact mental health, contributing to low mood and anxiety. Nourishing the body with wholesome food is essential for living a vibrant and balanced life.

Human connection

One overlooked aspect of health and wellbeing is healthy, positive relationships. Humans are innately social creatures, and in a modern (individualistic) society, nurturing human connection has never been as important as it is now.

Positive relationships reduce stress, enhance resilience, and even boost physical health by lowering blood pressure and improving immunity. Without sufficient connection, feelings of loneliness and isolation affect mental health and increasing the risk of anxiety and depression.

Building meaningful connections enriches our lives, providing the encouragement and understanding we need to thrive and reminding us that we are not alone in the world. Want to know more about this? Find out from Forbes Magazine why human connections are the key to a better life.

Mindfulness

Mindfulness, as well as human connection, is becoming increasingly critical overtime for our wellbeing.

As the world gets faster, we’re often expected to go faster too, leading to over-reactivity, cortisol levels that are through the roof, and general unhappiness.

A consistent mindfulness practice, especially mindfulness meditation, will train your mind to remain calm and present regardless of what is happening around you. We have a post that explains exactly why meditation is an essential wellness practice and how it will change your life, and another on why stillness – and meditation – is a wellness essential.

Sunlight

Sunlight is essential for our wellbeing, as it helps regulate our body’s natural rhythms – the circadian rhythm!

Exposure to sunlight enables the production of vitamin D, crucial for strong bones and a robust immune system. It also boosts mood by encouraging the release of serotonin, often called the “feel-good” hormone. Over time, a deficiency in vitamin D can lead to more serious health issues like weakened bones.

Hobbies

Hobbies are vital for wellbeing, bringing us a sense of joy and purpose beyond daily responsibilities.

Engaging in activities we love allows us to relax, express creativity, and connect with our passions. Hobbies also provide a mental break, reducing stress and improving focus. Without them, life can feel monotonous and overwhelming, especially in winter.

People without hobbies are more likely to experience burnout or a diminished sense of identity. So, embrace your hobbies and if you don’t have one at the moment, adopt one in order to build self esteem, resilience, happiness and remind yourself that there is more to life than work and routine obligations.

Relationship to self

Our relationship with ourselves is the foundation of our wellbeing, shaping how we experience life and connect with others.

When we nurture this bond, we align with our true self – the authentic core of who we are – rather than living through a false self created by external pressures or expectations. Failing to nurture this relationship will lead us to create unfulfilling, unhappy lives that resolve around the needs of others, and others expectations of us.

You can connect to your true self by paying attention to your gut feeling, and starting to be more honest with yourself about what aspects of your life feel nourishing and supportive, and which do not. Curious to know more about the true or authentic self vs the false self? Find out here.
